El castaño es un árbol de gran longevidad, porte majestuoso, fuste derecho, con copa recogida y frondosa, cuando va encaminado a la producción de madera, y de tronco corto y copa amplia y frondosa cuando se aprovecha como frutal. La castaña es un fruto generalmente de forma redondeada y en algunos casos plana a lo largo de uno de sus lados, de color variable según la variedad, pardo-rojizo, intenso y brillante. La pulpa es de color blanco amarillento, de sabor dulce y agradable. En su estado original las castañas están cubiertas por una capa dura y espinosa que se llama erizo que contiene de 1 a 5 frutos.

The  chestnut is a fruit that is generally rounded and in some cases flat along one of its sides, of variable colour depending on the variety, reddish-brown, intense and shiny. The pulp is yellowish white, with a sweet and pleasant flavour. In its original state, chestnuts are covered by a hard and thorny layer called a hedgehog that contains 1 to 5 fruits.
